Fausto Baldanti is Director of the Microbiology and Virology Unit at the Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia, Italy, and full Professor at the Department of Clinical, Surgical, Diagnostics and Pediatric Sciences at the University of Pavia.

His research focuses on understanding and counteracting viral diseases through an integrated approach encompassing diagnostics, pathogenesis, epidemiology, and therapeutics.

Prof. Baldanti research explores i) the development and clinical validation of innovative molecular, serological, and immunological assays for the accurate and timely diagnosis of viral diseases; ii) the pathogenetic aspects of viral infections during pregnancy, aiming to identify key prognostic parameters; iii) the pathogenesis of viral opportunistic infections in individuals with compromised immune systems. A central goal is to identify molecular and immunologic markers associated with disease risk and progression, which could lead to more personalized and effective interventions; iv) molecular epidemiological studies of emerging viral infections (e.g., Arboviruses, Picornaviruses, HEV), re-emerging viral infections (e.g., Rubella, Measles) and respiratory viral infections, including Influenza viruses, Coronaviruses, Picornaviruses, and Paramixoviruses; v) the development of human monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of emerging viral treaths.

His studies extend also to the pathogenesis of virus-related tumours and to the molecular mechanisms of viral drug-resistance.

His contributions to the field have been recognized with several prestigious awards and fellowships including the Heine-Medin Medal from the European Society for Clinical Virology (1997) and the ESCMID Fellow, from the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (2017).

Prof. Baldanti has published more than 550 papers in international scientific journals (PubList_Scopus) and is a member of key scientific committees, including the European Society for Clinical Virology (ESCV) and the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).
